A Tribute to Dusty Peak

Celebrating the life of a great husband, father, surfer, community leader

One can spend hours on this sight when first getting on just to "check it out". That's when I decided to be a participant rather than a spectator. I remember Dusty, when I was a kid, but knew Marty, his brother, more than Dusty at that time. I would have never imagined then, that he would be so present in my life now. Not only driving up and down the street many times a day, where we live, (we are neighbors), stopping ALWAYS, to say hi to Scout, our dog, but coming to the gym as often as 3 times a day...I almost feel liked we lived together in a sense. After reading, I realized how much of a home he made at Malibu Fitness not only for himself, but for SO MANY others. People often ask me, what is it, that makes M.F. so special and my response is "the people". This is so true as in the case of Dusty and ALL the lives he interacted with, not only members, but teachers, staff and visitors. "His Spot" on the classroom floor will be marked and missed by his presence FOREVER, and the closet where he kept his special mat is uncomfortably spacious. I battled everytime to get my mat in and out of the closet with his cumbersome, customized large bulky mat, mumbling under my breath, "why does he have to keep this in here"...oh well it's Dustys! Now I miss the battle and ALL his messes and special priviledges...(no shoes for Dusty, kinda like no leashes, I guess)unlimited coffee, the real reason so many come to the gym...some social, some sweat. He lives on with us all; whether it be in the surf, on the street, in the yoga and pilates classes or at the coffee counter. But mostly, where it counts the most, IN OUR HEARTS. xo, Lonnie

It's been so many years since I've seen Dusty...~ Marty and I were good friends and Dusty was such a "image of cool" to me. I love the story you tell of him, Lonnie. Thank you for helping me envision who he became. xo Roxanne

Dear Lonnie,

I will always remember how special it was for him to go to the gym and thank him for getting me to go as well. He had that affect on people and it became a huge part of our lives as well. He revolved his schedule around the classes at the gym. Thank you for putting up with him as well, I know he was not always easy. He was a huge presence there and the gym meant so much to him. He loved the teachers and the people, and you are right it is the people that always made him come back. It has been hard for me to come back but I know as more time goes by it will be easier for me. I am glad he warmed your heart your gym was a huge part of his life. Often when I came home and he was not there I knew where I could find him. Thanks for all the great memories and for putting on the yoga memorial was very special. Denise
