A Tribute to Dusty Peak

Celebrating the life of a great husband, father, surfer, community leader

First off... just have to start by saying... well done to all who organized, ran and participated in the memorial service... it was an event I'll never forget... and what a turn out...! props to all those who came to support the Peaks & pay their respects to Dusty...

I've been an employee at Malibu Fitness for nearly 5 years now & have gotten to know all of the Peaks pretty well through their much-used memberships at the gym... I grew up in Malibu & was in the same class as Alicia at Malibu High (class of 04) but had never met her family until i started working extensively at Malibu Fitness...

I really admired Dustys determination & courage to go through all he did, dealing with all the physical pain & yet continuing to go to yoga and pilates classes... he dealt with a lot of pain & yet kept a smile on his face... even just his gym profile picture speaks volumes to his character... Dusty holds a cain he was using after a surgery... upside down with the handle as a hook/noose around his neck & a huge Dusty-like grin on his face...

even when i didnt see dusty at the gym, if i'd been working a later shift or whatever, I knew he had been there... lets just say... Dusty wasnt the cleanest of gym members... If the shower was full of sand, i knew dusty had been there... if the classroom had foam blocks and yoga straps & stretch bands strewn out across the classroom floor, i knew dusty had been there... if there were fresh coffee stains on the classroom curtain, i knew dusty had been there... if there were good n plenty candy boxes or hot tamales, or lemonhead wrappers tucked in with the yoga mats, i knew dusty had been there... and i'd chuckle to myself & clean it up... visualizing him and the way he'd walk with his customized yoga (5 or 6 yoga mats cut up and glued together) mat thing to put it away in the gyms closet (a privlidge only he had)

When a class was about to begin and I was busy with cleaning the classroom floor... i'd walk back into the office and slip on the floor on spilt coffee & sugar... and know dusty was there (since he NEVER signed in his gym number 658 by the way... something Ashley more often would do when she'd come to yoga with him)

more times than not, i'd be joined in the office by dusty... he'd come hobbling in muttering to me... "Nick, my damn toes split again"... he'd proceed to sit down and put neosporin and about a dozen bandaids on cracked toes... he had split his toes open doing yoga... but he'd get bandaged up and go back in... after having a muscle milk or 2-3 more cups of coffee before though!

On numerous occasions there'd be a wetsuit drying on the railing outside the gym...

sometimes a large dog would come wandering in looking for him (but most of the time they'd be passed out in the back of his Honda Element)

If there was a quiet moment in the gym, he'd often talk with me... always the genuine guy... interested in how other people were... how they were fairing...

there was always a cause... or a petition to be signed

often i'd hear a roar of laughter coming from behind the curtain as dusty would be cracking jokes with the pilates ladies... they loved him... and so did asha the pilates instructor...

he wasnt too good with names... he'd call people by the name he could remember... Silla became Celia... Missy became MiMi... and we'd all laugh and grin... it was just the way he was... charming in his own way...

I am truly luck and blessed to have known him... he is one that I won't forget about as long as I live, especially that gap-toothed smile.. and his endearing personality...

I truly believe that when we pass on we go to what we individually believe to be our own paradise... and i'd like to think that Dusty is roaming around, pain free, surgery free, special shoe free, ankle-fuse free, polution free, val-free carbon copy of Malibu... of Pt. Dume... just the way he'd want it...surfing perfect waves...

as I finish writing this its 9:45am at Malibu Fitness... saturday... Dusty would've been in Pilates right now... i miss him... but im glad to know he's finally without all that pain, his spirit with his grin still amongst us all...

in other news, Malibu Fitness will be holding a Yoga class in Dusty's honor on Monday Sept. 14th at 5:30pm... his yoga mat, his yoga straps, stretch bands, foam blocks, cups of coffee, candy wrappers will be there & I will personally be signing Dusty's number 658 into our computer check-in system for the last time...
you are all invited to join in... come early to make sure you get a spot...
