A Tribute to Dusty Peak

Celebrating the life of a great husband, father, surfer, community leader

So many laughs & amazing times will be forever burned in my mind.

I first discovered Little Dume the spring of '92. I was a professional dancer & always wanted to be a surfer. Dusty & Skylar were huge mentors to me always encouraging me to "go" but sometimes i heard them saying "no" I don't think either ever told me not to go but the 2 words sound similar out there. When the surf was too big for my beginner status I would happily go out with Dusty in the front seat of his 2man kayak, paddle-less leaning as he instructed me & getting tubed. It was awesome & I was ecstatic!!! Denise thought I was crazy. Has she ever told you her 1 & only kayak go-out with Dusty??? These were the days of working nights to spend every day at Little Dume so for years I spent tons of time with the Peak's. They were all so welcoming & we have shared a ton of laughter. I can still hear Dusty now!

So my favorite Dusty story is not for the squeamish!!! It was a super hot day & the tide was really high so we all were stacked up by the boat house. Dusty was entertaining us with his death defying kayak rides, probably solo on a 2 man. We all would scream to the folks wading in front of us to "look out" when Dusty would be barreling in & beaching his kayak. We were cheering for him which fueled his fire!! 1 of his rides he rolled & fully wiped out shooting his kayak onto the sand. After tumbling around for a bit in the whitewash he stood up & somehow he literally SCALPED HIMSELF with his paddle & a flap of skin was flapping with some blood dripping down his face & head. We all were yelling to him & when he realized what we were saying he just grabbed the flap, ripped it off his head & threw it into the ocean roaring like a lion. We were all screaming in horror & he just laughed & returned to the ocean to kayak with blood streaming down his head. We were all mortified!

I remember Dusty's encouragement & kind words not only in the water but also through all of my 4 knee surgeries spanning 14 years. He is hugely missed as his personality was beyond huge. Also he always allowed me to wear a leash with the knee issues but I don't surf outter's as the short-boarders need somewhere to go without interference from us loggers...obviously old rules.

I feel so blessed to have a very special relationship with each of the Peak's (incl. all of the dogs over the years). I still expect to see Dusty at the corner in the Pt. Dume center parking lot, waving to me on the road & feel sad when I realize I will not! We were just laughing recently at Lisa Mac's bday bash & his passing is just so shocking.

My heart goes out to each of you Denise, Skylar, Alicia & Ashley! Though I can not begin to know how you are each feeling I can only imagine & send my deepest sympathies. Much aloha, lyny b.

Dear Lyny,

I remember that day from  when he scalped himself but nothing ever phased him. He was one of a kind in tht way. I hope you are well I have not seen you around town but wanted to thank you for your share. I hope to see you more this summer.I have been slow to respond to these special notes because it was to hard to read them but now I am embracing them. Miss you Denise
